how long in truth,,,what was the final "straw"
by peaches ini was in for 30 years.....my ex was an elder...."holy spirit appointed" he tortured me....i was married 33+ years....you know,,,marriage is sacred...you can leave,,,i know,,,,if abuse is intolerable....but that starts a series of events...etc etc etc....i finally left everything...and moved far away.....people actually believe "holy spirit" appoints people,,,my ex would not pray unless there was an audience...you know,,,,people invited over for supper kind of thing,,,you get the point..... my best friend had a mental breakdown,,,,she basically became psychotic.....had to be hospitalized....she took up smoking,,,got disfellowshipped...and lost all emotional support....to this day,,,,as far as i know,,,she is still disfellowshipped...needs to be hospitialized every so often....she is on complete disability.....and still trying to get back into the org....her mother does support some what,,,,even though she is a witness herself,,,,,takes her to assemblies,,,,memorial,,,etc,,,,this has gone on for years.....she cannot mentally handle the organization,,,nor can she mentally handle not being a witness...lost everything....guilt....etc..... did not mean to ramble on so much......i have mental scars that will not go away....because i stayed in a "mess" for god,,,,i could write page after page of things like the above....as being my "last straw".......curious about you here on the board....any specific "breaking point" or a collection of many things..... thanks for your in put...peaches.

About 32 years in. Mother became JW when I was about 2 years old.
The final straw was when I asked for a shepherding call on hubby and I, they were of no help at all. Instead they attacked hubby about working and how he should be doing more in service/meetings. (Hubby was already mentally out, I was trying to spiritually "save" us).
I was mad as a wet hornet! They criticized. They looked at the pictures of family weddings I had framed and said that we would want our children to marry a JW. They talked about how the annointed would be given positions higher than the angels.
It made no sense and revealed their lust for power, and inability to really spiritually help an individual. I felt our family was spiritually dying and they were my last hope.
I think that was the last straw. It also may have been the last assembly we attended where I wanted to get up and scream "LIAR! That's not what that scripture is saying!" It was some hog wash about an anti-type. As loyal as I was, I never bought the anti-type crap. I just pushed it to the side. We left at lunch time. I had a hard time staying until then, but hubby said we needed to not cause a scene. We went back to the hotel. You have never seen two little kids so happy! They were on cloud nine that we weren't going back! We spent the next day at the zoo where I felt a million times closer to God and spiritual than any day in a Kingdom Hall!
Thankfully in all my auxilary pioneering I never had a study or brought someone into the cult. There were so many baby steps that led up to these last straws, but these are the final deal breakers for me.

The sound of the winter wind blowing and howling while you sit toasty inside.
The sparkle of a thousand diamonds on an encrusted snow in the moonlight.
The "squeak" of the dry snow under your shoes.(Finally heard it this winter once here in the south, it's been 5 years since I hear it!)
The feel of a brisk cool air in your lungs. Hard to get that sometimes in the south with the humidity in the air.
The grass! Yes the beautiful, green, sweet smelling grass. Perfect for picnics and rolling down hills.
Boating on the lakes in Michigan, seeing the Mackinaw Bridge and the thrill of driving over. Having a pastie in the U.P. and heading over to Mackinaw Island!
The birch trees white bark. The pines covered in snow.
The majestic deer...they are different than the ones where we live in the south.
No threat of snakes, sharks or alligators in the water! (Except for one alligator that someone released in the summer into a sporting lake!)
Koegel's hotdogs.
The hard work ethic.
The school system!

With not only the here and now in mind, but my children and eventual grandchildren, it is extremely important to me.
I want to leave them the best nation possible. When I registered to vote, it was pouring rain. A small obstacle compared with the fight that women fought to get the vote, and what I did to get out of a Society that forbade it. I am proud to be able to be a good citizen and act responsibly.
I hope it counts. I hope my representatives are listening. I hope that we can keep this country from going to hell in a handbasket.
Our families have fought wars and shed blood for us. They deserve us to honor that and do what we can...even as simple as taking the time to stop and cast a ballot.
I refuse to belong to a "party" however. You have to earn my vote.
